Since its launch in 2021, FDI’s Sustainability in Dentistry project has aspired to motivate dentists, dental teams, and individuals around the world to reduce the environmental impact of dentistry on the planet.
The initiative serves as a means to achieve FDI’s own Vision 2030 and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals by inspiring commitment from key stakeholders in dentistry. A multitude of resources have been produced as part of the project to encourage people globally to start conversations regarding environmental responsibility and take action accordingly.

The Sustainability in Dentistry project’s latest resource, released in December 2023, is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) aimed at helping dentists, dental teams and students to understand the importance of sustainable practices and their own role in championing measures within dentistry that are environmentally responsible.
The MOOC is a comprehensive three-hour course, which touches upon diverse topics, including the role of dentists and dental teams in environmental sustainability, the impact of oral healthcare on the environment, and evidence-based sustainable dentistry.
Dentists, dental teams and students are encouraged to enroll in this course to embark on their journey as sustainability champions in oral healthcare.
Take action to deliver ethical and sustainable oral healthcare
Not sure on how to get started with taking concrete actions to reduce your dental practice’s environmental impact? Consult the Toolkit for Sustainable Dentistry – an interactive platform that has been tailor-made to provide dental professionals and individuals with tools and strategies to implement greener practices, as well as track progress.
Users can undertake different sets of challenges and subsequently earn bronze, silver, or gold recognition awards. Dental organizations and practices, all around the world, are urged to register and make eco-friendly choices as a team to showcase their commitment to our planet.
Promote patient-centred care and sign the pledge to deliver sustainable care
Individuals and organizations in the oral healthcare sector around the globe are invited sign the Pledge for Sustainable Dentistry and show allegiance for a better future. Through the pledge, stakeholders can commit to a series of actions to increase awareness, promote ‘reduce and recycle’ solutions, promote sustainability as a collective responsibility, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and harness science, technology and innovation to achieve the UN SDGs.

Get rewarded for your environmentally-friendly initiatives in dentistry
Each year, the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Award honours dental teams and individuals who have successfully implemented sustainable initiatives within their practices, providing global recognition for their efforts. No action is big or small, as each effort contributes to the improvement of the environmental impact of the dental profession.
FDI invites individuals and dental teams worldwide to apply for this prestigious award. The application deadline is 1 July and winners will be selected at the World Dental Congress 2024 in Istanbul, Türkiye.
