Abstract :
Modern dental practice relies heavily on radiological imaging as an essential diagnostic and therapeutic tool. However, the use of X-rays is not without risk for patients, practitioners and their assistants. In the African context, where regulatory, economic and training challenges are unique, the issue of radiation protection becomes a central public health and occupational safety issue. This conference aims to revisit the fundamentals of radiation protection by anchoring them in the daily clinical reality of the dental practice. It will focus on three essential pillars: justification, dose optimisation according to the ALARA principle, and the protection of dental practice staff and patients. Radiation protection is everyone's business. We are confident that your presence will enrich these discussions and contribute to the evolution of practices for safer and more responsible dentistry.
Learning objectives :
- State and apply the principle of justification in accordance with ICRP recommendations for prescribing dental radiological examinations
- List at least three techniques for optimising the doses delivered during a radiological examination.
- Describe the complete radiation protection protocol for the patient and healthcare team when taking a retroalveolar X-ray.
