GPHP experts host symposium at FDI WDC and introduce practical guide
The Global Periodontal Health Project (GPHP) experts hosted a symposium entitled 'Proactive prevention and effective periodontal care: Major challenges, scientific updates and key issues for success' at the FDI World Dental Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Main topics included global periodontal health challenges and related socio-economic impact; the new classification of periodontal and peri-implant disease; effective management of periodontal disease, as well as prevention, diagnosis and treatment; and periodontal care challenges, recommendations, solutions, and future perspectives.
The GPHP symposium and workshops were designed to keep dentists informed about the prevention and management of periodontal disease. During the workshops, GPHP experts Profs. Lijian Jin, Stefan Renvert, David Herrera and Jörg Meyle shared the recently published Periodontal Health and Disease: A Practical Guide to Reduce the Global Burden of Periodontal Disease, a tool designed for dental practitioners to help prevent periodontal disease and effectively diagnose and manage patients with periodontal disease. The GPHP workshops offered a unique opportunity to gain first-hand practical knowledge from worldwide experts and actively engage in the periodontal health conversation.
We are highly committed to providing possible solutions and calls for global action to promote periodontal health—both among healthcare professionals and communities. Our work also enhances the integration of oral/periodontal healthcare into all health policies. We believe that strong teamwork and global collaboration are essential for the success of the Global Periodontal Health Project.
Periodontal disease poses a significant health burden, yet awareness remains low in many countries. Periodontal disease, divided into two main categories, is a chronic inflammatory disease of bacterial aetiology that affects the tooth-supporting soft and hard tissue. The first category is plaque-induced gingivitis, which is gingival inflammation without bone loss. The second category is periodontitis, which is an inflammation of the gingival tissue resulting in loss of alveolar bone. GPHP strives to reduce and prevent periodontal disease worldwide.
GPHP engages the public, oral health and other health professionals, educators, and policymakers in preventing periodontal disease by promoting periodontal health. The project also encourages national dental associations to engage with chief dental officers and ministers of health to implement the United Nations’ Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, which recognises the oral disease burden in all FDI member countries.
