New Massive Open Online Courses launched for oral health professionals and cleft care teams
The courses will equip oral health professionals and the cleft care teams to improve the oral health of children who undergo cleft surgery.
Cleft lip and/or palate (cleft) can affect as many as 1 in 500 births. From the time they are born, children with cleft face many challenges that affect their ability to breathe, eat, speak, hear and socialize. A wide range of cleft treatments including surgery can help children regain their functional abilities and confidence to thrive in society. However, the journey only starts here, and it is vital for oral health professionals and the wider cleft care teams to provide the right information to patients with cleft and their families about good oral health to ensure the highest possible quality of life.
Equip yourself with the necessary tools and information to improve the oral health of patients with cleft
FDI and oral health non-profit Smile Train have been working together as part of the Oral Health in Comprehensive Cleft Care project to provide new resources on the standard of oral health and integration of dental care for patients with cleft. Recently, two new massive open online courses (MOOCs) were launched targeted towards oral health professionals and cleft care teams respectively.
The MOOCs seek to equip them with the necessary information and tools to take care of the oral health of children who undergo cleft surgery. Each MOOC is a three-day course designed to ensure all members of the cleft care team are aware of the importance of oral health and can take an active role in preventing oral diseases. The goal is that on completion, the whole team will be confident, competent clinicians who are able to apply their knowledge to prevent and diagnose oral diseases and know when to refer patients onwards.
Through the course, participants will be able to access a variety of resources and materials including a Trainers Manual and an Advocacy Guide.
Take the course today to help improve the oral health of children with cleft lip and/or palate, and spread the word amongst your colleagues and peers.
The Oral Health in comprehensive cleft care project is supported by Haleon.
